The Jewish Music Institute (JMI) is the UK’s home for Jewish music. For over 40 years, we’ve celebrated, preserved, and reimagined this rich and diverse heritage, making it accessible to all, regardless of age, background, or belief. Rooted in Jewish tradition, JMI is proudly ecumenical – engaging with and embracing the many musical cultures that surround it, fostering dialogue and collaboration across communities and genres.
Jewish music tells countless stories. From Yemenite chants to Yiddish swing, Ladino ballads to contemporary jazz, JMI brings this living tradition to life through performance, education, and community.
Our work spans many strands: the JMI Youth Big Band, schools outreach programmes, our renowned Summer Schools (Yiddish Song & Language, KlezFest), the JMI Archive, the Joe Loss Lectureship in Jewish Music at SOAS, academic conferences, and a bold new focus on the future of Jewish sound – through new commissions and the forthcoming JMI Label.
